Overview

Following the success of our first awards programme for Asia-Pacific in 2014, the Financial Times is delighted to announce the 2015 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards.

When FT Innovative Lawyers was established in Europe almost a decade ago, it sought to break with the usual criteria of measuring lawyers by revenues, profits or deal sizes. Instead, it aims to uncover the real value that lawyers deliver to business and reward the lawyers consistently furthering the interests of their clients, their own firms and the profession itself.

The 2015 FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards will celebrate the most innovative legal work in the region from both international and Asia-Pacific headquartered law firms. This year we have expanded the coverage of the report, now including work undertaken in Australia, China and Hong Kong, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. We will also recognise the firms that are doing the most to transform the legal market, the in-house legal teams that are adding the most value to business, and the most innovative individuals working in the Asia-Pacific region.

FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers has received over 390 individual submissions from 80 different firms. Research partner, RSG Consulting conducts hundreds of client, expert and lawyer interviews to assess and rank these submissions. It will make the one of the most thorough, well-researched and detailed windows into the Asia-Pacific legal market.

Join us at the event and meet some of the most innovative lawyers in the Asia-Pacific region, the firms at the forefront of innovation, and the GCs and in-house teams that driving forward change in their own businesses.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 2015

The FT and its research partner RSG Consulting have devised a unique methodology to rank lawyers on innovation for the FT Innovative Lawyers Reports and Awards in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. Law firms and in-house legal teams are invited to submit their innovations. These are then fully researched through client, lawyer and expert interviews. No entry appears in the FT report or shortlists without a robust client or independent reference. Market experts are also consulted on selected submissions.

The FT Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Report and Awards have expanded in coverage in 2015. This year we received more than 400 submissions from 81 law firms headquartered in 13 different countries. RSG Consulting conducts interviews with hundreds of senior lawyers, executives and experts between March and May 2015 to create the Asia-Pacific rankings and shortlists. Law firm categories are divided into separate sections for law firms headquartered within or outside the Asia-Pacific region respectively.

Each law firm entry is scored out of 10 points on originality, rationale and impact to give a total score out of 30. They are benchmarked against each other to arrive at the final rankings. The top ranked entries in each category comprise the awards shortlists, and the award is given to the entry with the highest score.

The In-House Lawyers rankings are drawn from nominations as well as submissions, but all entries require third party validation and commendation.

The overall ‘Most Innovative Law Firm’ and regional awards recognise law firms with the highest aggregate score for ranked submissions across all the private practice categories of the report.

The 10 Innovative Individuals are selected from nominations and submissions to all categories of the report. The top ten individuals are selected on the basis of particularly strong client reviews, interviews, additional written responses and a history of professional achievement. The award winner is selected by a panel of FT and RSG Consulting judges.

We will do this by ensuring we always challenge ourselves to bring new and original ways of thinking to the complex legal challenges our clients face.

Over the past year we have worked with some of the world’s leading businesses on transactions that have changed their industries. These include: advising Ahold on its merger with Delhaize to create Europe’s largest listed food retailer and the fifth largest in the US with 6,500 stores; working on Anheuser-Busch Inbev’s takeover of SABMiller plc - the largest commercial loan in the history of the global loan markets at USD75bn; advising on the ground-breaking Coral South Floating LNG project in Mozambique across eight A&O offices; and advising Cagamas on the largest ‘dim sum bond’ in Southeast Asia and the world’s first offshore renminbi bond issued by a mortgage company.
Building on our long heritage enables us to attract the most talented people and continue to deliver this level of innovation with and for our clients.

To support our clients’ international strategies, we have built a truly global network now spanning 44 offices in 31 countries. We have also developed strong ties with relationship law firms in over 100 countries where we do not have a presence. This network makes us one of the largest and most connected law firms in the world, with a global reach and local depth that is simply unrivalled.

Global coverage in today’s market does not simply mean having offices in important cities around the world. For us, it means combining our international resources and sector expertise to work on cross-border transactions directly in the markets and regions important to our clients.
