Overview

Now in its eleventh year of publication, the FT Innovative Lawyers Report has become one of the top legal rankings in Europe and the accompanying awards are widely regarded as the best researched in the market. Over the past decade, it has assessed legal innovation in over 50 different countries from over 400 unique law firms and over 400 company in-house legal departments.

The FT Innovative Lawyers Report represents a unique analysis of the legal industry, assessing lawyers on their innovation both for clients and in their own businesses. We base both the report and awards on thorough research and robust journalism.

This year, the constraint of strict categories was removed from the outset allowing submitters more freedom to choose initiatives from any practice area or part of the business. We will celebrate the standout legal innovations of 2016 at an awards ceremony in London on 5 October.

Research methodology 2016

FT Innovative Lawyers Europe 2016 is a rankings report and awards for European-based lawyers. Shortlists for the awards comprise the top ranked submissions in each section of the report.

The FT and its research partner RSG Consulting have devised a unique methodology to rank lawyers on innovation. Law firms, in-house legal teams and other legal service organisations are invited to submit their innovations. These are then fully researched through telephone interviews. No entry appears in the FT report or awards shortlists without thorough research and analysis including robust client, independent, and expert references.

Each entry is scored out of 10 points for originality, rationale and impact for a maximum score of 30. They are then benchmarked against each other to arrive at the final rankings and shortlists. Lawyers are ranked for delivering exceptional value to business.

The In-House Lawyers rankings and awards shortlists are drawn from nominations as well as submissions, but all entries require third party validation and commendation.

Judges

While the FT Innovative Lawyers awards are researched, a panel of judges is used to decide the winner of the Legal Innovator of the Year and Young Innovator of the Year awards from a shortlist of ten and five individuals respectively, who stood out in the research.

At a time of significant change in the legal industry, we are determined to continue leading the market as we have done throughout our 86-year history. We will do this by ensuring we always challenge ourselves to bring new and original ways of thinking to the complex legal challenges our clients face.

Over the past year we have worked with some of the world’s leading businesses on transactions that have changed their industries. These include: advising Ahold on its merger with Delhaize to create Europe’s largest listed food retailer and the fifth largest in the US with 6,500 stores; working on Anheuser-Busch Inbev’s takeover of SABMiller plc - the largest commercial loan in the history of the global loan markets at USD75bn; advising on the ground-breaking Coral South Floating LNG project in Mozambique across eight A&O offices; and advising Cagamas on the largest ‘dim sum bond’ in Southeast Asia and the world’s first offshore renminbi bond issued by a mortgage company.
Building on our long heritage enables us to attract the most talented people and continue to deliver this level of innovation with and for our clients.

To support our clients’ international strategies, we have built a truly global network now spanning 44 offices in 31 countries. We have also developed strong ties with relationship law firms in over 100 countries where we do not have a presence. This network makes us one of the largest and most connected law firms in the world, with a global reach and local depth that is simply unrivalled.

Global coverage in today’s market does not simply mean having offices in important cities around the world. For us, it means combining our international resources and sector expertise to work on cross-border transactions directly in the markets and regions important to our clients.
