Edward W. Barnholt guided Agilent Technologies through its spin-off from Hewlett-Packard in 1999 and served as Agilent's president and CEO from 1999 to 2005. He was also the company's chairman from 2002 until his retirement in 2005. Mr Barnholt joined Hewlett-Packard in 1966 and went on to serve in many executive positions, lastly as EVP and general manager of the Measurements Organization that became Agilent. In addition to his public company directorships, Mr Barnholt serves on the board of trustees of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and is a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum. Suzanne Nora Johnson
Suzanne Nora Johnson is former vice chairman of The Goldman Sachs Group. She also served as Chairman of the Global Markets Institute and was a member of the firm’s management committee. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Ms Johnson was an attorney with Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and worked as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals. She currently serves on the corporate boards of American International Group, (Chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee), Intuit (Lead Director and Chair of the Compensation Committee), Pfizer, and Visa. (Chair of the Compensation Committee.) She also serves on the boards of several nonprofit institutions, including the Broad Foundation, the Brookings Institution (Vice Chair), the Carnegie Institution for Science (Co-Chair), the Markle Foundation, TechnoServe, the University of Southern California and Women’s World Banking. She chairs a number of endowment investment committees. Ms Johnson also chairs the Global Agenda Council on The Future of Banking for the World Economic Forum. She received her JD from Harvard Law School and her BA from USC.
Dave Dorman has been the non-executive chairman of CVS Health since 2011. He has been the founding partner of Centerview Capital Technology Fund since 2013. Mr Dorman served as non-executive chairman of Motorola Solutions (formerly Motorola, Inc.) from 2008 through 2011, and served as lead director until his retirement from the Motorola Solutions board in 2015. From 2006 to 2008, Mr Dorman was a managing director and senior advisor with Warburg Pincus. From 2005 to 2006, he served as president and a director of AT&T, Inc (formerly SBC Communications). From 2002 to 2005, he was chairman and CEO of AT&T Corporation. Prior to this, he was president of AT&T Corporation from 2000 to 2002 and CEO of Concert Communications Services, a former global venture created by AT&T and British Telecommunications, from 1999 to 2000. Mr Dorman is as a trustee for Georgia Tech Foundation. He was a board member of Yum! Brands until 2017.
Asheem Chandna joined Greylock in 2003. As a company director, he work closely with CEOs, founders, management teams with strategy, recruiting, customer acquisition, business development, marketing, operational excellence, company financings and exits. Mr Chandna has served on 18 technology company boards, including three public companies (Palo Alto Networks, Imperva, Sourcefire), and many that have been acquired in strong outcomes. Forbes has included him in The Midas List five times, most recently in 2016. Previously, Mr Chandna was VP of business development and product management at Check Point Software, VP of marketing with CoroNet Systems (acquired by Compuware). Before this, he was at SynOptics/Bay Networks and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Born and raised in India, Asheem holds BS and MS degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
Irene Chang Britt
Irene Chang Britt joined Campbell Soup Company in 2005 and held a number of roles including president, Pepperidge Farm and senior vice president and chief strategy officer with responsibility for global strategy development, global marketing services and global consumer insights. Prior to Campbell, Ms Chang Britt held leadership roles with Kraft Foods and Kimberly-Clark. She earned a BA from University of Toronto and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Ms Chang Britt is a National Association of Corporate Directors board leadership fellow and formerly served on the board of Sunoco.
Nora Denzel served as the interim CEO of Outerwall from January 2015 to August 2015 after retiring from Intuit in 2012 as SVP of big data, social product design, and marketing at Intuit. Ms Denzel joined Intuit to lead the QuickBooks Payroll division in 2008. Previously, she served as a senior executive at HP Enterprise, where she led three over one billion dollar technology divisions: enterprise software, storage, and consulting & integration. Prior to HP, Ms Denzel was SVP of product operations at Legato Software (now part of EMC). She led engineering, the CTO office, technical support, product marketing and product management. She started her career as a software engineer at IBM, spending 13 years at the firm in key senior engineering, marketing and executive management positions. She is currently a trustee and board vice president of the Anita Borg Institute and holds a BS in computer science and an MBA.
John J. Donahoe II served as CEO and president of eBay from 2008 to 2015. He joined eBay in 2005 as president of eBay Marketplaces, responsible for eBay's global e-commerce businesses. Previously, Mr Donahoe served as the CEO and worldwide managing director of Bain & Company from 1999 to 2006, and served as the firm's managing director from 1982 to 1999. He joined Bain & Company in 1982, serving as head of the San Francisco office for seven years. Prior to that, he worked for the Rolm and Salomon Brothers. Mr Donahoe received a BA in economics with high distinction, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, where he currently serves as vice chairman of the Advisory Council.
Rocco Grillo is an executive managing director with Stroz Friedberg and a member of the firm’s executive management team. He is also in charge of the firm’s cyber resilience business, which includes the company’s incident responders and security scientists who deliver the firm’s proactive and reactive cybersecurity capabilities. Previously, Mr Grillo was a managing director in Protiviti’s IT risk consulting practice, providing clients with cybersecurity and risk management services. He also led Protiviti’s global incident response and forensics investigations practice, where his team of incident responders and forensic examiners successfully triaged some of the largest data breaches recorded in the last decade. Mr Grillo previously helped develop RedSiren Technologies, a leading MSSP and full services security firm that evolved out of Carnegie Mellon. Earlier in his career he held management positions with Lucent Technologies and Bell Atlantic.
Mr Grillo is a CISSP, CRMA, PCI-QSA, and Certified Third Party Risk Assessor. He is an affiliate board advisor for FS-ISAC and NH-ISAC, a member of the Shared Assessments Program Steering Committee board, the CLM Cyber Liability Council, and has also served on the board of directors of the NY Metro ISSA Chapter, the IT Policy Compliance Group, and the (i-4) International Information Integrity Institute Research Steering Committee.
Hannah Kuchler is US Pharma and Biotech Correspondent for the Financial Times, with a particular focus on how technology is transforming healthcare. She is based in San Francisco. For five years, Ms Kuchler served as FT’s San Francisco Correspondent where she covered Silicon Valley and technology with a focus on social media and cyber security. Ms Kuchler was previously a London-based UK news reporter for the FT, covering British politics and general UK news. Prior to this, she worked on the FT’s newsdesk, as Asia Correspondent for FT Tilt in Hong Kong, and covered US markets in New York. Before joining the FT in 2009, Ms Kuchler was the Editor of The Oxford Student and won the Guardian’s Student Reporter of the Year award in 2008. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Modern History from Balliol College, Oxford.
Since 1992, Cathy Lego has been the sole member of Lego Ventures LLC, an early stage technology consulting firm. She was a general partner of The Photonics Fund, an early stage venture fund focused on investing in components, modules, and systems companies for the fiber optics telecommunications market from 1999 to 2009. She was a general partner at Oak Investment Partners from 1981 to 1992. Ms Lego was previously a director of WJ Communications. She received a BA from Williams College and an MS in accounting from the New York University Stern School of Business. She has previously practiced as a Certified Public Accountant with Coopers and Lybrand.
Lisbeth McNabb currently serves as president of Food Technologies Lab, a tech venture and commercialization business within Boston Consulting Group. Previous innovation and entrepreneurial successes include roles as founder, president and CEO of DigiWorks, CRO and CFO of Match. Ms McNabb’s professional background includes more than 20 years in sales and business development, operations, finance and planning in growth and emerging stage businesses at and business unit head at w2wlink, PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay, American Airlines, AT&T and Sodexo.
Ms McNabb received a BS from University of Nebraska and an MBA from Southern Methodist University and is currently an advisory board member at both universities. She is a former director of Tandy Brands and former advisor to American Airlines, ClubCorp, 4Word and SitterCity. Ms McNabb was named a 2015 NACD Top 50 Director, a 2013 Digital Director 50 by Financial Times’s Agenda Magazine, and a 2011 Distinguished Alumnae by SMU Cox School of Business.
Michael Patsalos-Fox has served as CEO of Stroz Friedberg, a global investigation and cyber security firm, since November 2013. He was previously a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he most recently served as a member of McKinsey’s operating committee and leader of McKinsey’s new business growth opportunities around data, analytics, and software. Mr Patsalos-Fox held various other positions with the firm since 1981, including Managing Partner of the New York and New Jersey offices. He also served on McKinsey’s board of directors from 1998 to 2010. From 2003 to 2009, Mr Patsalos-Fox also served as Chairman of the Americas for McKinsey. He received a BS from University of Sydney and an MBA from the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland.
David S. Pottruck has been chairman and CEO of Red Eagle Ventures, a private equity firm, since 2005. He has also served as chairman of Hightower Advisors, a wealth-management company, since 2009. Mr Pottruck teaches in the MBA and Executive Education programs of the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, and serves as a senior fellow in the Wharton School of Business Center for Leadership and Change Management. Previously, Mr Pottruck had a 20-year career at Charles Schwab that included service as president, CEO, and a member of the board.
Matthew Scott is managing editor of Agenda, a Financial Times service providing news and intelligence for corporate directors. Previously, he was editor of Corporate Secretary, a governance, risk management and compliance magazine and website. Over his career, Mr Scott has served as a reporter for AOL Daily Finance and Crain’s Financial Week, as well as managing editor and personal finance editor at Black Enterprise. A Rutgers University graduate, he is a recipient of a University of Michigan Knight Wallace Fellowship. He is also a former president of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Ruby Sharma engages with and assists corporate boards and audit committees on a broad range of governance topics including composition and structure, self-assessments, charter formation and agendas. She provides guidance to EY teams in the development of custom training and materials used to help new board members or those new to the audit committee. Additionally she provides one-on-one training for directors and helps them identify networks and resources that can assist them in their role. Ms Sharma also works closely with Tapestry Networks and its nine networks of audit committee chairs across the country. She consults on content and participates in most meetings. Ms Sharma is a trustee of the Princeton HealthCare System and is chair of its audit committee. She currently serves on Asia Society’s Business Council and in 2011, the Asian American Business Development Center recognized Ms Sharma as one of the Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business.
Godfrey R. Sullivan has served as a member of Splunk's board of directors since 2008 and chairman since 2011. Mr Sullivan previously served as Splunk’s president and CEO from 2008 to 2015. From 2001 to 2007, he was with Hyperion Solutions, a performance management software company (acquired by Oracle), where he served in various executive roles, most recently as president and CEO from 2004 to 2007. Mr Sullivan has been a director of Citrix Systems, an enterprise software company, since 2005. He holds a BBA from Baylor University.
Maggie Wilderotter stepped down as executive chairman of Frontier Communications in April 2016. She retired as CEO of the company one year earlier. Mrs Wilderotter joined Frontier in 2004 as president and CEO and was elected chairman in 2006. Previously, she was SVP of Global Business Strategy and ran the Worldwide Public Sector at Microsoft. She also served as president and CEO of Wink Communications, EVP of National Operations for AT&T Wireless Services, CEO of AT&T's Aviation Communications Division, and SVP of McCaw Cellular Communications. Mrs Wilderotter serves on the boards of the Conference Board, Catalyst, Women in America, the Business Council and the Committee of 200. In 2014, she chaired the Blue Ribbon Committee on Board Strategy for NACD and is a member of WomenCorporateDirectors. Mrs Wilderotter holds a bachelor's degree from College of the Holy Cross. In 2014, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree, honoris causa, from the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Outstanding Directors Awards Program
Since its inception in 1998, the FT-ODX Outstanding Directors Program has honored more than 130 independent directors from across corporate America. Outstanding Directors are identified by their boardroom peers for the key role they have played during a crisis, a business transformation or a turnaround. They are selected after consulting with members of the Outstanding Directors Advisory Board - sitting directors and CEOs from a cross-section of U.S. industry - and completing extensive research into their companies and careers.
The stories of our winners show independent corporate governance at its best. Our mission is to shed light on this rarely reported positive side, and to provide a platform for sharing best practices and lessons learned.
The program operates under the rubric of The FT Outstanding Directors Exchange - the umbrella organization for the Outstanding Directors Awards and the FT-ODX conference series in corporate governance.
Awards Selection Process
To be eligible for the Outstanding Directors award, individuals must be an independent director of at least one publicly traded U.S. company. Nominations can originate from any source (e.g., Chairman, CEO, Corporate Secretary, fellow director) but must be seconded by at least one independent director who sits on a board with the candidate.
Nominations submitted from January through August will be considered in the same year. Those received from September through December will be held for consideration the following year. Click here to submit a nomination.
Given the large number of nominations received each year, only those nominators whose candidates are finalists will hear directly from the Outstanding Directors Program. Thank you for your understanding.
Vetting and Selection of Winners
The Outstanding Directors program is ultimately responsible for naming each annual class of Outstanding Directors. We choose the award winners after consulting with members of our Advisory Board and completing our own extensive research into the candidates' companies and careers.
We look for:
- Contributions that have "moved the needle" for the companies served.
- Stories that demonstrate an effort well above and beyond the call of duty during critical periods.
- Individuals who are admired by fellow directors for courage, integrity and consensus building skills.
