Is Asia pioneering insurance innovation globally? It is a diverse and dynamic region which comprises some of the world’s most -as well as least- developed insurance markets coupled with a rapidly growing middle class. Home to several leading global tech centres, how is Asia channeling its own inventions into distributing protection throughout all its communities? What are the business dynamics between traditional incumbents and ‘challengers’? How is the industry collaboratively strategising for longevity? In what way are new technologies facilitating effective new products tailored to local cultures and evolving digital customs? And as business and society become increasingly interlinked in a less than secure cyber-sphere, what are the associated risks and opportunities for insurance companies? How should the industry navigate the business opportunities and ethical pitfalls presenting themselves in the epic ascent of Big Data?

Meanwhile, international regulatory frameworks continue to add complexity. How can the industry manage its capital requirements and investment portfolios to optimum effect? What is the local economic outlook and how are wider global trends and political risks going to impact the region? The FT Asia Insurance Summit 2017 conference convenes a diverse wealth of experience and expertise from across the whole region to discuss how the year ahead will prove pivotal for growth, penetration and innovation in Asia.

Live Debate, Q&A and Voting: This House Believes..... That AI and Big Data will be an Ultimate Force for Good for the Insurance Sector - Yes or No?

AI - a major driver of efficiency or a contentious robber of jobs? Big Data - a 21st century Big Brother or a leading driver of financial inclusion and protection? As technology, artificial intelligence and the subsequent availability of big data all grow we ask, by way of a lively panel debate and live audience voting, whether these will all amount to a force for the better or worse for the industry.

Questions to consider as we reflect on both sides of the debate will include:

    • How far are Big Data actually being harnessed and utilised at all? If the opportunities are not even being tapped then little impact will be felt either way. What might the sector be able to learn from other sectors or challengers in terms of making better use of data and technology?
    • Harvesting information from 3rd parties, social media or telematics - in financial services who is doing what and why?
    • Attitudes, culture and trust: as the data proliferate what are consumer attitudes to their personal data, privacy and insurers’ use of online and ‘on-device’ data? What are the ethical pitfalls and red-lines? And how is the industry going to ensure stewardship and best practice in ensuring a customer-centric end-to-end use of technology and data? How can regulators effectively keep up with rapid changes?
    • Whose data? Whose body? Whose digital footprint? Whose protection? Whose health? Whose incentive? - A focus on how new tech could be both good and bad for health insurance customers... including questions of moral hazard and asymmetric information on both sides
    • World of opportunity or a model about to break: If one can price down to the individual what happens to risk pooling? Is the industry strategically ready and resilient in the face of big data?
    • Robots, AI and deep learning - enabler for all or economic risk to the insurance work force?
