Collaboration is key to addressing the challenges and realising a successful patient-centered future for healthcare. Novel partnerships and alliances are emerging and stakeholders are extending their reach beyond their traditional domains. Coordinated thinking and cooperation throughout the health value chain will help build an understanding of how to integrate new technologies, facilitate a smooth transition and ultimately reduce costs and improve patient outcomes.

The third instalment of the FT Digital Health Summit USA will take a fresh look at how patients, providers, payers, innovators, regulators and investors can work together to ensure that technology is consistent and effective in meeting the demands of patients and health services. Discussion will delve deep into the trends and opportunities and explore the funding, innovation and approaches needed to drive forward the digital age of health.

Ernesto Quinteros joined Johnson & Johnson in 2014 to become its first enterprise-wide Chief Design Officer, with the mandate to integrate design across the company’s consumer, medical device and pharmaceuticals sectors. He believes that the application of design-thinking at the intersection of physical and digital touch-points, leads to better patient outcomes and stronger brand experiences. Ernesto is also focused on improving the experiences and productivity of J&J employees around the world, with solutions ranging from mobile applications to work environments.

Prior to J&J, Ernesto was Chief Brand and Chief Design Officer for Belkin International where he was responsible for design, marketing and engineering. He led innovation programs in partnership with brands such as Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Dell, HP, Nike, Samsung and Target. The Belkin WeMo “Home Automation – IoT” system received an innovation award from Fast Company magazine and a UXAward. His design work in brand identity, digital, packaging, products and environmental design has received international acclaim by IDSA, I.D., Good Design, iF Hannover, iF China, Red Dot, Excellent Swedish Design and CES. He has been awarded numerous patents and is a Board Member of the Design Management Institute (DMI).

Dr Newman has a 20-year history in health IT development, implementation and strategy. He has designed, built, and managed numerous applications, including those for medical residency administration, billing and clinical care, promoting collaboration between physicians, and easing the adoption of electronic medical records systems.

In his current role at Salesforce, Dr Newman is responsible for success across provider, payer, pharmaceutical and medical device and diagnostics companies, and for Health Cloud, Salesforce’s flagship healthcare industry product.

Prior to Salesforce, Dr Newman worked as a practicing family physician and assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCLA with a research focus on health information technology. 

Dr Newman received his MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and completed his residency in Family Medicine at the Advocate Illinois Masonic/UIC program. He also completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA, a postgraduate fellowship, and received an MSHS degree in Health Services.

Ms McGraw is a well-respected expert on the HIPAA Rules and brings to her positions a wealth of experience in both the private sector and the non-profit advocacy world. Prior to joining HHS, she was a partner in the healthcare practice of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP.  She previously served as the Director of the Health Privacy Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, which is a leading consumer voice on health privacy and security policy issues, and as the Chief Operating Officer at the National Partnership for Women & Families, where she provided strategic leadership and substantive policy expertise for the Partnership’s health policy agenda.   Ms McGraw graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland. She earned her JD, magna cum laude, and her LLM from Georgetown University Law Center and was Executive Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. She has a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Daniel Kraft

Daniel Kraft is a Stanford and Harvard trained physician-scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and innovator.  Dr Kraft has over 25 years of experience in clinical practice, biomedical research and healthcare innovation.  He has chaired the Medicine track for Singularity University  since its inception in 2008, and is Founder and Executive Director of Exponential Medicine, a program that explores convergent, rapidly developing technologies and their potential in biomedicine and healthcare.

Following undergraduate degrees from Brown University and medical school at Stanford, Dr Kraft was Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics after completing a Harvard residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital & Boston Children's Hospital, and fellowships in hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplantation at Stanford.   He has multiple scientific publications and medical device, immunology and stem cell related patents through faculty positions with Stanford University School of Medicine and as clinical faculty for the pediatric bone marrow transplantation service at University of California San Francisco.

Dr Kraft is a member of the Kaufman Fellows Society (Class 13) and member of the Inaugural (2015) class of the Aspen Institute Health Innovators Fellowship.

He is also the inventor of the MarrowMiner, an FDA approved device for the minimally invasive harvest of bone marrow, and founded RegenMed Systems, a company developing technologies to enable adult stem cell based regenerative therapies. Dr Kraft is an avid pilot and has served in the Massachusetts and California Air National Guard as an officer and flight surgeon with F-15 & F-16 fighter Squadrons. He has conducted research on aerospace medicine that was published with NASA, with whom he was a finalist for astronaut selection.

Lloyd B Minor is a scientist, surgeon, and academic leader. He is the Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, a position he has held since December 2012. He is also a professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and a professor of Bioengineering and of Neurobiology, by courtesy, at Stanford University.

As dean, Dr Minor plays an integral role in setting strategy for the clinical enterprise of Stanford Medicine, which includes the Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. With his leadership, Stanford Medicine has established a strategic vision to lead the biomedical revolution in precision health, a fundamental shift to more proactive and personalized health care that empowers people to lead healthy lives.

Before coming to Stanford, Dr Minor was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of The Johns Hopkins University. Prior to his appointment as provost in 2009, Dr Minor served as the Andelot Professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and otolaryngologist-in-chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

With more than 140 published articles and chapters, Dr Minor is an expert in balance and inner ear disorders. He is perhaps best known for his discovery of superior canal dehiscence syndrome, a debilitating disorder characterized by sound- or pressure-induced dizziness. He subsequently developed a surgical procedure that corrects the problem and alleviates symptoms.

Dr Minor is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Deneen Vojta is a member of the core Enterprise Research and Development leadership group, a division of UnitedHealth Group that is focused on accelerating enterprise innovation solutions to improve health care quality, reduce care costs, more effectively engage consumers in their health and help modernize the health system.

Before joining UnitedHealth, Dr Vojta held several senior management positions in health care including serving as CEO of MYnetico, a company she founded to focus on the childhood obesity epidemic facing the nation.  Dr Vojta has more than 20 years of executive experience in health system and health plan administration.  She has served as a board member of non-profit health care institutions, and earned numerous federal and foundation grants to investigate complex health care concerns.  Recent accomplishments include a National Diabetes Prevention Program in partnership with the Y-USA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an evidence-based childhood obesity solution, and Project NOT ME, a reality TV diabetes prevention program that earned Dr Vojta a regional Emmy for her role as an Executive Producer.  She also was named a CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards Best of Innovations Honoree in 2014. 

Dr Vojta earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine.  She trained in paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and in 2003 was named “Top 40 under 40”by the Philadelphia Business Journal.  In 2011 she was named among the “Top Women in Business” by the Minneapolis-St Paul Business Journal.

He used this as a platform to improve data sharing between all parties involved in the patient's healthcare journey to create Medicalchain. The company's headquarters are in London, UK but plan to roll out this platform worldwide. As well building Medicalchain, Dr Albeyatti continues to serve his community by seeing patients and sits on the board of IGB at NHS Digital.

Dr Albeyatti believes that blockchain technology has the ability to revolutionise the healthcare system by providing a platform that empowers people with full access and control over their own personal health records.

Ashish Atreja

Ashish Atreja has received formal training in public health and is board certified in gastroenterology, clinical informatics and internal medicine. Over the last fifteen years, he has led many public health and informatics initiatives at Cleveland Clinic and Mount Sinai Medical Center, NY that includes developing online education modules, leading EHR implementation, performing analytics on healthcare data and developing enterprise-wide mobile apps. As Chief Technology Innovation and Engagement Officer, Medicine, he leads the Sinai AppLab (www.sinaiapplab.org) that is one of a kind collaborative hub to build and test disruptive mhealth technologies.

Dr Atreja leads scientific registries for American Gastroenterology Association and serves in Innovation Advisory Board for American College of Cardiology. As an intrapreneur, Dr Atreja has won innovation awards at Cleveland Clinic and Mount Sinai, successfully licensed technologies from academic centers and advises startups, accelerators and Fortune 500 companies in digital medicine.  More recently, Dr Atreja launched first enterprise-wide app curation and prescribing platform that is licensed to Mount Sinai Spinoff, Responsive Health (http://responsivehealth.org). Recently, Dr Atreja established Network of Digital Medicine (www.nodehealth.org) to connect innovation centers worldwide and share best practices for digital medicine innovation and implementation. Dr Atreja has published more than 60 papers and has presented and advised globally on topics related to digital medicine, patient and health system outcomes.

Daniel Barchi

Daniel Barchi is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of New York-Presbyterian, one of the largest healthcare providers in the US and the University Hospital of Columbia and Weill Cornell. He leads a team of more than 700 informatics and technology specialists who deliver the tools and data that physicians and nurses use to deliver acute care and manage population health.  Before joining New York-Presbyterian, Mr Barchi was Chief Information Officer of the Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Health System. In that role he established nation-leading analytics and clinical research technology practices and led a $300m Electronic Medical Record project. Before joining Yale, he was Senior Vice President and CIO of the $1.4bn Carilion Health System, and led the integration of Carilion’s operations through implementation of Electronic Medical Records at seven hospitals and 140 physician practices.Mr Barchi was previously President of the Carilion Biomedical Institute and Director of Technology and Engineering for MCI WorldCom. In both roles, he was appointed as CEO, COO, and Chief Restructuring Officer of privately held and venture-backed companies in the healthcare and technology industries. Earlier, Mr Barchi served as MCI's Director of Global Project Management responsible for product deployment in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Mr Barchi began his career as a US Naval officer at sea on guided-missile cruisers. During his service, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Southeast Asia Service Medal for Iraq operations in the Red Sea, and the NATO Service Medal for Bosnia operations in the Adriatic Sea.

Mr Barchi holds a BS from Annapolis, the US Naval Academy, and a Master of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University. He is faculty at Yale University.

Prior to founding EverlyWell in 2015, Julia was the Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy at MoneyGram International, a public financial services company that operates in 200 countries. As the youngest VP in the company, she worked for MoneyGram’s CFO for several years, leading corporate transactions, restructuring projects, and special projects for the CEO.

After attending Vanderbilt, Julia started her career in management consulting at Deloitte and went on to earn her MBA from the Harvard Business School, where she graduated as a Baker Scholar with high distinction.

John is a serial healthcare entrepreneur who most recently participated in the acquisition of MeYou Health, upon whose Board he now serves.  Prior to GAP, John served as the co-founder and Chairman of Telcare, Inc, a high technology manufacturer of the first wirelessly enabled blood glucose meter designed to empower patients with diabetes to better manage their disease.

Mr Dwyer has held “C” level positions in six emerging growth companies in the healthcare industry. His past assignments have included serving as CEO of e-Medex, Inc, which later merged with Active Health Management to become the leading provider of population health management services where he served as the Chief Operating Officer. Active Health was purchased by Aetna in 2005. He was also a co-founder and Chairman of CodeRyte, Inc, a venture-backed seller of medical billing software using natural language processing to generate billing codes.  CodeRyte was purchased by 3M in 2012.

Mr Dwyer co-founded Us Against Alzheimer’s, a patient advocacy group focused on changing the way the country addresses the threat posed by Alzheimer’s. He also co-founded the first political action committee focused on a specific disease, the Alzheimer’s Action PAC. He began his career as an attorney with the Washington DC based law firm of Arent, Fox LLP where he focused on transactions in regulated industries.  Mr Dwyer is a graduate of Marquette University and the Cornell Law School.

The GAP Foundation is dedicated to making the clinical trial process for Alzheimer’s therapies substantially more efficient thereby speeding cures to patients afflicted with this insidious disease.

At AARP, Jody is focused on ways to spark innovation in the market to benefit people over 50. He is a former Patient Editor at The BMJ and former CEO and Co-founder of PHmHealth, a digital health company focused on post-acute care and compliance. His experience as a patient spans over 3 decades. He is a 3-time kidney transplant recipient with other chronic conditions. Michael was invited to testify/advocate before the FDA and serves as PCORI (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute) patient representative. Additionally, he serves on the steering committee of a PCORI-Funded initiative. He has also overseen the mobile app development taskforce and the data governance taskforce for the same PCORI-funded initiative, the NephCure Kidney Network. Michael is a tireless, independent patient advocate and a healthcare strategist. He strongly believes that patients should play integral roles in healthcare companies and government agencies. 

Michael holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from the Fox School of Business at Temple University.  He also has a BA in Biological Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a published author, recent pieces in the American Journal of Transplantation and the BMJ.

Kabir is a senior commercial leader with more than 25 years of broad international biopharma and devices experience who has shaped strategy and delivered results in complex, challenging business environments at country, regional and global levels. He has lived and worked in the UK, France, Spain, India, Singapore, China and the US. Kabir joined Otsuka to head the North American pharmaceutical business in 2016, with direct responsibility for Otsuka America Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Avanir and Otsuka Canada. Before joining Otsuka, Kabir spent 13 years in leadership roles at Bristol-Myers Squibb(BMS). Most recently he was Senior Vice President, Virology, Transplant & Optimized Brands, responsible for the commercialization of a significant portfolio – including drugs for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C and immunosuppression in the USA. Previously he was Senior Vice President, Global Commercialization Virology & Neuroscience, leading global strategy for these two disease areas. In addition, he served as interim head of Emerging Markets for much of 2012. Kabir joined BMS in Singapore in 2003 as Vice President for South East Asia/ Taiwan/HK and moved to Shanghai in 2005 as president of BMS China. Daniel Skovronsky is Senior Vice President, Clinical and Product Development at Eli Lilly and Company, with responsibility for developing the Lilly pipeline of molecules and speeding innovative medicines to patients.  Prior to this role he served as Vice President, Tailored Therapeutics.  Dr Skovronsky also serves as Chairman of Avid Radiopharmaceuticals (a wholly owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company). 

Dr Skovronsky joined Lilly in 2010 when the company acquired Avid Radiopharmaceuticals.  Previously, Dr Skovronsky served as CEO of Avid, which he founded in late 2004.  At Avid, Skovronsky led the discovery, development, and FDA approval of Amyvid®, the first diagnostic agent for brain imaging of beta-amyloid plaques in patients with cognitive impairment being evaluated for Alzheimer's disease and other causes of cognitive decline.

Dr Skovronsky trained as a resident in pathology and completed a fellowship in neuropathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  He received his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and did his undergraduate training in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University.
