Kelly McCarthy is a Director at the Global Impact Investing Network (the GIIN), where she leads on impact measurement and management, including the IRIS standards. In this role, she engages strategic partners, standards-setting bodies and investors to define what it means to invest for impact. She leads the GIIN’s work with investors to promote and implement impact considerations in day-to-day investment management.

Before joining the GIIN, Ms McCarthy was the Global Impact Officer for New Ventures at the World Resources Institute, where she worked to build a ground-up impact measurement programme for New Ventures global operations. Before New Ventures, Kelly worked for the consultancy SustainAbility, where she focused on accountability within Fortune 500 companies. Specifically, she explored how disclosure of social and environmental performance to shareholders and the public can drive mainstream adoption of sustainable behaviour.

Ms McCarthy chairs and/or serves on several advisory committees for market-building impact measurement and management initiatives, including most recently the World Economic Forum's Dream Team on Accelerating Impact Measurement & Management, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Transparency & Data Charter. She was also the secretariat to the Impact Measurement Working Group of the Social Impact Investment Taskforce established by the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations.

James Lee Sorenson is Head of the Sorenson Impact Foundation, whose mission is to fund sustainable, scalable endeavours that maximise positive impact on people, families, communities and local economies.

Over his career, Mr Sorenson has built companies in industries ranging from technology and life sciences to real estate and private equity investment. Combining innovative and worthwhile ideas with talented management teams, he has produced growing new enterprises and has been instrumental in developing several new industry categories, including the digital compression software that helped usher in the online video revolution, through Sorenson Media, and video relay services for people who are deaf and hard of hearing, through Sorenson Communications.

Mr Sorenson has also helped establish programmes and organisations that improve the lives of the poor, build regional business communities and train the next generation of entrepreneurial and investment leaders. In addition to supporting self-sustaining charitable enterprises at the foundation, Mr Sorenson donates time, money and energy to institutions that help low-income people become self-sufficient.

In 2013, Mr Sorenson created the Sorenson Impact Center at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah with a $13m endowment. With 25 staff and more than 50 graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Utah and beyond, the centre helps communities in the US and overseas harness private capital, data and innovation to address complex social and public health problems.

Mr Sorenson has served on a variety of community service boards, including the University of Utah’s Board of Trustees, the David Eccles School of Business Board of Trustees, the University Venture Fund, Art Works for Kids, Gallaudet University’s Board of Trustees, the Utah Sports Commission, the National Alliance on Impact Investing and Village Capital, where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board.

Adam Wolfensohn is Co-Managing Partner of Encourage Capital, an asset management company formed by the recent merger of Wolfensohn Fund Management and EKO Asset Management. A unique partnership of disciplined investors and creative problem-solvers, the new firm is already working with major asset owners to deploy investment capital to solve problems like global ecosystem decline, climate change, and bringing financial services to the world’s poor. Previously, Mr Wolfensohn was Managing Director at Wolfensohn Fund Management and also managed the Wolfensohn family office cleantech and environmental markets strategies. From 2003 to 2006, he produced the climate change documentary, “Everything’s Cool,” that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. From 2002 to 2003, he worked with Conservation International to create a market for carbon credits from avoided deforestation projects. Prior to 2002, Mr Wolfensohn composed music for numerous films, television commercials and theater productions as founder and CEO of Red Ramona, an award-winning music and sound design studio in New York City. He is a Trustee of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Yad Hanadiv, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and Bang on a Can. He is a member of the investment committee of Rockefeller Brothers Fund and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr Wolfensohn earned a BA from Princeton University and an MEM from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Ismail Ahmed is Founder and CEO of WorldRemit, a digital money transfer company that offers a low-cost alternative to traditional money transfer companies, which use high street agents and charge higher fees. Since Mr Ahmed founded the company in 2010, it has secured almost $200m in funding. In 2015, Deloitte recognized WorldRemit as the fastest growing technology company in the UK. In June 2017, WorldRemit won the overall award for Excellence in Transformational Business at the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards

Mr Ahmed has 20 years’ experience in the money transfer industry, spanning academic, consulting and in-house roles. Before setting-up WorldRemit, he worked for the United Nations Remittance Programme, helping African money transfer companies comply with anti-money laundering rules introduced after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He has also worked with the United Nations in Nairobi and Dubai.  

Originally from Somaliland, Mr Ahmed has been named one of the top 10 most influential black Britons in the UK and won EY Entrepreneur of the Year, London and South. He received a scholarship to attend the University of London and has a business degree from London Business School and a PhD in Economics. 

Philip Brown

Citi Capital Markets Origination

Philip Brown is a Managing Director and Head of Global Green and Social Bonds in Citi’s Capital Markets Origination business. He has been at Citi for 18 years and has been involved in the origination of more than 70 green and social bonds underwritten by Citi since the introduction of the Green Bond Principles (GHP) in 2014. Since early moves by the SSA (sovereign, supranational and agency) sector, Mr Brown has championed the issuance of green bonds by FIG, corporate and EM issuers across the globe.

Mr Brown was involved in the initial drafting of the green bond principles in 2014, and was a delegate Representative for Citi on the Executive Committee from 2014-2016. Over the past year, he has been an active member of the GBP Social Bond working group.

He is also a member of Citi’s Green & Social bond screening committee and works alongside Citi’s environmental banking, sustainability and environmental and social risk management teams to ensure that all green bonds led by Citi – one of the two GHP founding banks – are aligned with GHP guidelines. 

Mr Brown is a member of Citi’s EMEA Climate Counsel, established in 2007, which seeks to advance environmental sustainability both in terms of reducing Citi’s own greenhouse gas emissions and sharing environmental product expertise across the firm.    

He joined Salomon Smith Barney from Nikko Europe in September 1998.

Sebastian Carneiro is Director of Energy Efficiency at SUSI Partners, a Swiss investment advisor that specialises in the financing of sustainable energy infrastructure. Mr Carneiro has several years of experience in structuring project finance deals, having arranged more than €500m in project finance loans.

Before joining SUSI, he worked in the Energy & Infrastructure as well as Corporate Development departments of HSH Nordbank. He started his career as a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Graduating in industrial engineering and management, Mr Carneiro is a CFA Charterholder. He studied at the University of Applied Sciences Wedel and the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration.

Sir Ian Cheshire

Sir Ian Cheshire was appointed to the Board of Barclays UK as a non-executive Director in April 2017. He was appointed Group Chief Executive of Kingfisher from January 2008 and left the group in early 2015. Before taking up this position, he was Chief Executive of B&Q. His previous roles at Kingfisher from 1998 onwards include Chief Executive of International and Development, Chief Executive of e-Kingfisher and Group Director of Strategy and Development. 

Before joining Kingfisher, Sir Ian worked for a series of large and small retail businesses over 15 years including Sears, owner of Selfridges. He has also been Chairman of the British Retail Consortium, Chairman of the Prince of Wales Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change and President of the Business Disability Forum President’s Group. In addition, he chaired the Ecosystem Markets Task Force. Sir Ian retired as non-executive director of Bradford & Bingley eight years ago.

Sir Ian has won a number of awards, including lifetime contributions to retailing, green business and the Fortune WEF award for leadership in the circular economy. Sir Ian was knighted in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to Business, Sustainability and the Environment He is a Chevalier of the Ordre National du Merite of France.

His other current principal external appointments include Chairman of Debenhams, Chairman of Maisons du Monde, Senior Independent Director at Whitbread, Chairman of Menhaden and lead non-executive director for the UK government.

Francois  de Borchgrave

Francois de Borchgrave is Founder and Director of KOIS Invest, a firm specialising in impact investing. Mr de Borchgrave has more than 12 years of experience in private equity investments, with a focus on impact investing in the past six years.

Prior to founding KOIS, he founded an internet startup for business services and he worked within large corporates in the technology sector. Additionally, Mr de Borchgrave is co-founder of Toolbox, a non-profit that provides management services to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and was a volunteer for several NGOs such as Mother Theresa and Operation Thermos.

Mr de Borchgrave also lectures on social entrepreneurship at Solvay Brussels School of Business. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Batchelor’s degree in Commercial Engineering from Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management.

Sam Duncan leads Profit with Purpose measurement at LeapFrog, as well as the firm’s work on integrated performance. She oversees Financial, Impact, Innovation and Risk Management (FIIRM), LeapFrog’s proprietary Profit with Purpose measurement framework. Ms Duncan also convenes LeapFrog’s global portfolio performance review, driving integrated Profit and Purpose performance.

Ms Duncan, who has 10 years of experience of working in emerging and developed markets, joined LeapFrog as an early member of the firm’s Southeast Asian deal team. She came to the team with a strong background in transaction, which she acquired from her time at Goldman Sachs (investment banking M&A, healthcare), as well as from roles at EMP (the Central American Mezzanine Infrastructure Fund, now managed by LAP Latin American Partners), the India-based Grassroots Business Fund and TechnoServe, based in Honduras.

Ms Duncan has also held operating roles, first as a Performance Improvement Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and subsequently as Head of Economic Development (Microcredit) at Supporting Kids in Peru. At SKIP, she ran a microfinance program for 100 small-scale borrowers and created initiatives to open up business opportunities, housing and healthcare to SKIP’s microcredit borrowers.

Ms Duncan holds a BCom from the University of Queensland (Valedictorian) and a master’s in international relations from Johns Hopkins SAIS (Valedictorian).

Christopher (Edge) Egerton-Warburton is a Partner of Lion’s Head Global Partners, a London and Nairobi based investment banking firm that specializes in finance for emerging markets, with a focus on sustainable development.

Mr Egerton-Warburton has been a participant in the field of innovative financing for health for the past 10 years. He served as the Fund Manager of the Global Health Investment Fund (GHIF), a $108m investment fund structured by JPMorgan Chase and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to finance late-stage drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for infectious diseases and maternal health challenges.

Prior to establishing Lion’s Head, Mr Egerton-Warburton spent 14 years at Goldman Sachs in the Debt Capital Markets group, where in his last role he was head of the sovereign, supranational and agency team. At Goldman Sachs, he was the lead banker on the establishment of  International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm), a multilateral development institution, on behalf of the governments of France, Italy, Norway, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and the UK, which has raised more than $3bn to fund the immunisation programmes of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

Mr Egerton-Warburton is a board member of the IFFIm. He holds an MA in Biochemistry from Oxford University.

Michele Giddens

Michele Giddens co-founded Bridges Fund Management along with Philip Newborough and Sir Ronald Cohen in 2002. The firm is dedicated to sustainable and impact investment and has raised more than £800m across three types of funds: Sustainable Growth, Property and Social Sector funds.

Ms Giddens has more than 20 years of international development and social finance experience. She was an Investment Officer with the International Finance Corporation, the private sector financing arm of the World Bank Group, in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s. Previously, she spent eight years with Shorebank Corporation, one of the US’s leading community development banks, where she ran small business lending programmes in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, advised on microfinance in Bangladesh, the Middle East and Mongolia and conducted research into the US community development finance sector. 

Ms Giddens is on the board of CDC Group, a development finance institution owned by the UK government, and Chair of the UK National Advisory Board to the Global Social Impact Investment Steering Group, established by the Group of Eight (G8) Industrialised Nations. She has a BA Honours in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University and an MBA from Georgetown University. 

Samir Ibrahim

Prior to his role at SunCulture, Mr Ibrahim studied finance and international business at New York University’s Undergraduate Stern School of Business and worked in PwC’s Financial Services, Structured Products and Real Estate Group.

Mr Ibrahim is recognised as a World Energy Council Future Energy Leader alumni and a Forbes 30 Under 30, which highlights the brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers in the US.

Mahesh Jayakumar, is a Vice-President and Senior Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Investment Strategist at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA). In his current role, he is responsible for supporting all aspects of sustainable and responsible investing on behalf of the company and its clients, including business and product development.

Prior to taking up his current position, he was a Senior Fixed Income Portfolio Manager in the Global Fixed Income Passive team, where he managed portfolios in sectors such as US Government and Credit, Global Sovereigns, Green Bonds and other client directed mandates. Since joining State Street in 2008, he has been involved with several ESG and sustainability-related activities within the company including membership in the Corporate Responsibility Working Group as well as Environmental Sustainability Committee. He also held roles in State Street Global Markets, where he spent time in the Investor Behavior Research Team (IBRT) working on the development of quantitative equity market indicators.

Mr Jayakumar holds an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, a master’s degree in computer science from Boston University and bachelor’s degree in information systems from Purdue University. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and Boston Security Analysts Society. He has also earned the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation and is a member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP).

Jeremy Keele is President and CEO of the Sorenson Impact Center at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. At the centre, Mr Keele works to develop innovative and data-driven approaches to solving challenging social problems. So far, the centre has facilitated more than $100m in impact investments in social enterprises around the world and is currently advising on evidence-based social interventions (including a variety of social impact bonds) in more than a dozen state and local jurisdictions around the US.

Before joining the University of Utah, Mr Keele was Senior Advisor to Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams from 2013 to 2015. During his time at Salt Lake County, Mr Keele advised the mayor on key policy initiatives, including financing, transportation, homelessness, criminal justice, health, culture and the arts and economic development. From 2006 to 2013, Mr Keele practiced corporate transactional law in New York, London and Los Angeles with the law firms Cleary Gottlieb and Latham & Watkins.

Mr Keele received his Juris Doctor from New York University in 2006, a Master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in 2006 and Bachelor’s degrees in biology and French from Brigham Young University in 2001.

Justine Leigh-Bell

Justine Leigh-Bell is Director of Market Development at Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), an investor focused non-profit working to mobilise debt capital markets for climate change solutions. Her areas of focus include sustainable development in emerging economies, climate change mitigation/adaptation strategies, climate finance, economic valuation and market-based instruments for managing natural resource assets.

In emerging markets, she works with public and private sectors in developing national policy guidelines and investment roadmaps that will enable access to green bond financing. She currently leads CBI’s efforts in Latin America, where market development programmes are underway in Brazil, Mexico and Columbia.

Ms Leigh-Bell has spent much of her career helping business leaders and governments find solutions to climate change and sustainable development challenges. Previously, she led the development of the International Climate Bonds Standard Program, where she worked closely with industry leaders and global experts in establishing a screening tool to help investors to prioritise climate and green bonds. She has provided advisory services for global institutions and governments across Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia and Latin America.

Ms Leigh-Bell has an MSc in Molecular Science from Yale University and an MSc in Environmental Economics and Policy from Imperial College, London.  

Ron    Margalit

Ron Margalit is Principal of Blended Impact Investments at Lumos Global, the world’s first distributed utility. A veteran principal investor and entrepreneur working at the intersection of innovation, blended capital and impact, he is focused on social investments in emerging markets.

In addition, Mr Margalit is a partner in Venture Kinetics, a new impact venture capital focused on investing across Sub-Saharan Africa in high-growth technology-based companies that address gaps in the delivery of primary products and services. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of Tel Aviv University Global Grand Challenge Innovation.

His previous roles have included a position as the first appointed economic representative to the Board of the World Bank Group by the Government of Israel. He has been an advisor on innovative financing to Global 500 companies and a mentor to SMEs in East Africa.

Mr Margalit’s work on financing access to energy has received awards and recognitions from organisations including the Financial Times, the World Bank and Secretary of State John Kerry. On his Executive Education programme at Harvard Business School, he focused on strategy in emerging markets. He earned his MBA from Georgetown University and his Bachelor’s degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Rob Mills

Rob Mills joined Social Finance in October 2016 as a director of its International Development Practice. Mr Mills advises aid agencies, social investors and private enterprises on how development finance can more effectively tackle social challenges. He has particular expertise in energy, infrastructure services and private sector development.

Mr Mills worked for eight years at the World Bank, where he originated and managed a large portfolio of energy investments in southern Africa, as well as advising governments on policy and regulatory reforms. Before joining Social Finance, Mr Mills held a senior role at Ofgem, the UK’s energy regulator, where he led policy work on European energy markets and was responsible for the UK’s cross-border infrastructure investment regime. Previously, he worked on international issues at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit in the UK Government, following several years in Brussels at a development finance think-tank.

Mr Mills began his career at Oliver Wyman, a leading strategy consulting firm focusing on banking and financial markets. He has a graduate degree in economics from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in social anthropology from the University of Oxford. 

Diana Noble

Diana Noble is the Former Chief Executive of CDC Group, a development finance institution owned by the UK government. With a background in private equity, venture capital and international development, she was a partner at Schroder Ventures (now Permira) for 12 years, Founder and Chief Executive of e-Ventures, a venture capital firm, and Founder and Managing Director of Reed Elsevier Ventures. 

Ms Noble joined CDC after five years with the Clinton Foundation’s Health Access Initiative, where she took a number of roles, including Executive Vice-President of Operations, responsible for 43 countries and five global teams. In this role, she oversaw the scaling up of a global programme to give children the same access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment that is available to adults. She has also been an Advisor to the Supervisory Board of Actis, a leading investor in growth markets in Africa, Asia and Latin America. 

Ms Noble has a first class law degree and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

As Head of Sustainability and Responsible Investment Strategy at Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), Meryam Omi is responsible for engaging on sustainability themes globally and development of responsible investment product solutions. She leads on the project to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the fundamental research of mainstream funds and to carry out sector- and theme specific engagements on key sustainability topics, such as climate change, water and corporate tax policy.

Ms Omi has more than 12 years of investment experience in asset management companies, starting her career as a business proposal writer for fixed income funds. She joined LGIM in 2008 to set up a business proposal team and project managed various marketing and sales initiatives across a wide range of products and capabilities.

After completing an MSc in Environmental Decision Making, she joined the Corporate Governance team in 2010 to establish the engagement programme on environmental and social topics as LGIM signed up to the UN Principles of Responsible Investment and the UK Stewardship Code.

Gayle Peterson is Associate Fellow at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford where she directs the Oxford Impact Investing and Social Finance Programmes. In this capacity, she oversees curriculum development and programme design and serves as a faculty member and tutor, teaching social investing.

At Saïd in 2013, Prof Peterson co-founded Women Transforming Leadership, a programme helping women to overcome personal or professional obstacles and build heightened self-awareness as they move through their careers. She speaks and lectures on gender lens investing, women in private equity and social investing.

Prof Peterson is Senior Managing Director of pfc Social Impact Advisors, an international social investing consultancy offering strategic guidance in leadership development, transparency, programme strategy and performance measures. She has managed and assessed more than $15bn in philanthropic and impact investments, advised social investors in more than 45 countries and taught social investing classes in China, Africa, Europe, Russia and North America.

Prof Peterson has also held positions including Programme Director for the Great Lakes Protection Fund, Legislative Director for the Chicago Council on Urban Affairs and Chief of Staff, Commissioner of the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

She holds a Master’s degree in Social Policy and Law, University of Chicago and Master of Science from HEC-Paris School of Management and Oxford University. Her book, Good, Evil, Wicked: The Art, Science and Business, to be published by Stanford University Press in 2018, focuses on the intersection of successful business and social sector strategies for social change.

Jeremy Rogers is Chief Investment Officer at Big Society Capital, a wholesale financial institution that aims to improve people’s lives through investment. Over the past five years, along with co-investors, Big Society Capital has established almost £1bn of impact investment vehicles for charities and social enterprises in the UK. 

Mr Rogers has more than 20 years of experience in the investment and social sectors. His career began as a pit trader on the London Futures Exchange for SG Warburg. He set up and ran JP Morgan’s European High Yield Trading group, turning it into the market leader and becoming JPM’s youngest managing director. He then became a partner at Praxient Capital, a multi-asset investment fund. His social sector roles include positions at the Prince’s Trust, Ashoka, Big Issue Invest and Pilotlight. 

In addition to his roles on Big Society Capital’s Investment Committee and Executive Committee, Mr Rogers sits on Big Issue Invest’s investment committee, the joint investment committee at Access – the Foundation for Social Investment and the Lankelly Chase Foundation’s investment committee. He is also a senior advisor to the Rockefeller Foundation’s Innovative Finance programme.

Kees van Lede is Chief Executive of CarePay. He has held this position since January 2017, after previously having been the company’s Chief Commercial Officer. Between September 2013 and February 2016, Mr van Lede led the mHealth (mobile health) activities that PharmAccess deployed in Kenya, including its partnership with Safaricom. Mr van Lede’s key achievement while in this role was the inception of CarePay. 

Before joining PharmAccess, Mr van Lede was one of three Managing Directors at Guidion, an IT services firm based in the Netherlands. He started his career working for Unilever, holding several international positions in the field of marketing, innovation and corporate strategy. At Unilever, he developed his focus on and interest in developing services for the world’s poorest communities.

Mr van Lede holds a Master’s degree with Distinction in Applied Physics from Delft Technical University and an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD Business School in France.

    Following the launch a decade ago of the world’s first social impact bond—designed to reduce recidivism at the UK’s HM Prison Peterborough—these financing mechanisms caught the market’s imagination as a new means of raising private sector capital for social change. Not all social impact bonds (which are not bonds but pay-for-performance contracts) have achieved their goals and their transaction costs are high. However, some see them as important tools, allowing governments and others to think more creatively about financing social change and measuring the results.
