Overview

This year’s awards event and report will be different from previous years. Last year, we got rid of the strict categories into which lawyers could enter their innovations and created new categories that we believe are meaningful to people both within and outside the law.

This year, we have again taken a new approach to the research and increased our rankings of in-house legal teams to match those in private practice. The report will provide a comparison of how in-house and private practice lawyers are innovating and on 7 June we will be awarding both sides.

This year’s awards will cover law firms and in-house legal teams operating in Australia, China and Hong Kong, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.

Join us at the event and meet some of the most innovative lawyers in the Asia-Pacific region, the firms and in-house teams at the forefront of innovation, and the GCs that are driving forward change in their own businesses.

Research Methodology

FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific 2018 is a rankings report and awards for lawyers based in the Asia-Pacific region. Shortlists for the awards comprise the top ranked submissions in each section of the report.

The FT and its research partner RSG Consulting have devised a unique methodology to rank lawyers on innovation. Law firms and company in-house legal teams are invited to submit their innovations. These are then fully researched through telephone interviews and reviews. No entry appears in the FT report or awards shortlists without a robust client or independent reference. Market experts are also called in to assess the submissions and the research.

With a new approach to the research this year, the 2018 report will provide a comparison of how in-house and private practice lawyers area innovating, with two ranking tables for each category.

Each entry is scored out of 10 points for originality, leadership and impact for a maximum score of 30. They are then benchmarked against each other to arrive at the final rankings and shortlists. Lawyers are ranked for delivering exceptional value to business and society.

In-House Award Sponsor (1)

At a time of disruptive change in the legal industry, we are determined to continue leading the market as we have throughout our 85-year history.

We will do that by staying one step ahead and by constantly challenging ourselves to bring new and original ways of thinking to the most complex legal challenges our clients face globally.

Over the past year we have worked with some of the world’s most sophisticated businesses on market-leading transactions that have changed the competitive landscape. This includes: advising on the largest oil refinery project in Vietnam (Nghi Son) and the joint venture between H.C. Starck and Vietnam’s largest private sector company, Masan Group; advising on the ground breaking creation of Abu Dhabi’s first financial free zone, the Abu Dhabi Global Market; and representing Novartis in its successful patent battle with MedImmune over Novartis’ blockbuster drug Lucentis – to name just a few achievements. We are able to build on the foundations of our long heritage to attract the most talented people and develop the high-performance culture necessary to innovate and change the face of business. Our commitment to help our clients deliver their global strategies has seen us build a truly global network now spanning 45 offices in 32 countries. We have also developed strong ties with relationship law firms in more than 100 countries where we do not have a presence.

Our network has allowed us to become one of the largest and most connected law firms in our peer group, with a global reach and local depth that is simply unrivalled.

So when we talk about global coverage, we are not just talking about having offices in some important cities around the world. We mean being able to combine our international resources and sector expertise to work on cross-border transactions directly in the markets and regions important to our clients.
