Ma Weihua was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the China Global Philanthropy Institute (CGPI) in 2015. Founded by five American and Chinese philanthropists, Bill Gates, Ray Dalio, Niu Gensheng, He Qiaonyu and Ye Qingjun, the CGPI is committed to advancing philanthropy in China, fostering international co-operation in philanthropy and promoting reforms in global philanthropy.
Dr Ma is Chairman of the One Foundation. He is a member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Chairman of the National Fund for Technology Transfer and Commercialization, Chairman of Supervisory Board of Taikang Insurance Group, Chairman of the China Entrepreneur Club and Executive Director of the China Society for Finance.
Formerly, he was Executive Director, Governor and CEO of China Merchants Bank (CMB), Chairman of Wing Lung Bank, Chairman of the Board of Directors for CIGNA & CMB Life Insurance Co and Chairman of China Merchants Fund Management Co. He was Governor of the People's Bank of China, Hainan Branch, and Secretary of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, Hainan Branch.
He is Chairman of the China Business Initiative of Columbia University, a member of the Advisory Council of the City of London and a member of the Advisory Board of the New York Financial Consulting Committee. He is a professor at several universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University.
Dr Ma has been included in the “China Philanthropist Personages”, the “iAsk Future Financial Leaders” for advocating social finance in China and the “2017 Top Ten Chinese Social Promoters”. He was named a laureate of the 12th Compassion Award 2017. He holds a PhD in Economics and an Order of the Star of Italy (OSI).
