Although the global economy is strengthening, the UK economy faces an uncertain future. Brexit negotiations, the US and an unpredictable geopolitical climate mean that disruption to markets could be just around the corner. With interest rates starting to rise and inflation expected to continue on an upward path, insurers must consider changing their portfolios to suit the evolving environment.

As attitudes to risk and return change, insurers are shifting their allocations towards non-traditional asset classes such as property, infrastructure and private equity. In the current environment, what is the outlook for yield across the spectrum of asset classes?  Which has the best investment potential and what are the most effective strategies to boost returns? How can insurers weather economic uncertainties while managing portfolios in a way that maximises yield and manages risk appropriately? Is there yield in diversity?

Association of British Insurers (ABI)

Mr Savill is Director of Regulation at the ABI, with accountability for relations between the insurance industry and the Bank of England on prudential regulation, for relations with the Financial Conduct Authority on conduct regulation, and also for taxation issues affecting insurers.

He sits on the Executive Committee of the ABI, and reports through the Prudential, Finance and Tax Committee to the ABI Board. At the ABI he has held a number of Assistant Director roles, covering EU and international affairs, UK public affairs, and ABI member relations and events. He was temporary Director of Investment Affairs for 18 months before moving into his current role in 2012.

He joined the ABI in 2005 from the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), now the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. In 20 years at the DTI, Hugh worked on the finance and governance of the Department, faced off to the Scott Inquiry into the sale of arms to Iraq, and specialised in the negotiation of EU regulation.

He is a well-known insurance lobbyist at European and International level, member of the ECOFIN Committee of Insurance Europe, and chairs the Capital Task Force of the Global Federation of insurance Associations.

He was educated at Harrow School, and read Modern Languages at New College, Oxford University.

Ashish Dafria

Ashish Dafria is the Chief Investment Officer for Aviva UK Insurance, with over £225bn of assets, and is responsible for defining investment strategy and delivering the investment performance. Previously, he was the Global Head of Research for Aviva Investors, where he led the creation of Aviva’s first cross capital structure (equity and credit) corporate research team, having previously led the establishment of Aviva’s first global credit research team. Before this, he was Aviva Investor’s Head of Credit Research for North America, after joining the firm as a senior analyst.

Prior to joining Aviva Investors, he was a Director with UBS Investment Bank, advising financial sponsors and corporate clients on M&A, capital raising and other strategic and financial transactions. Previously, he was a Senior Ratings Analyst with Crisil (Indian subsidiary of Standard & Poor’s).

Mr Dafria is a CFA charterholder and earned his MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University, where he graduated at the top of his class. Ashish also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Indore, India.

Jayne Styles has a wealth of financial services experience.  She has been MS Amlin’s Chief Investment Officer since 2002, where she directs investment: strategy, governance and operations for their market leading £6bn plus global multi-asset, multi-manager portfolios.  She is a member of the Group Oversight Committee that develops and oversees corporate strategy for the MS Amlin Group.  A member of the Japanese MS&AD Insurance Group, MS Amlin is a global specialist insurance and reinsurance underwriting company that, whilst domiciled in the UK, has a number of overseas operating subsidiaries. 

Prior to joining Amlin, Ms Styles worked as an independent management consultant advising a number of blue chip companies, whilst completing an Executive MBA at Cranfield. She was previously Head of International Equities at Halifax Fund Management Limited. She is also a non-executive director for the FTSE100 investment management services company Hargreaves Lansdown plc and a member of the Corporation of Lloyd’s Investment Committee. She is an Associate of the Chartered Financial Analyst Society of the UK, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, as well as a qualified Executive Coach.

Richard Lockwood is Head of Northern European Distribution for Morgan Stanley Investment Management. He joined Morgan Stanley in 2004 and has 33 years of industry experience. Previously, he worked as Business Development Director at Fleming Asset Management and prior to that, as Finance Director at Fleming Pooled Pensions. Mr Lockwood received a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Manchester and is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Heneg Parthenay joined Insight in January 2015, as Head of Insurance. Before joining Insight, he was Head of Insurance at BNY Mellon Investment Management EMEA Limited. He also sat on BNY IM EMEA’s executive committee. Prior to joining BNY Mellon, he spent eight years at Aviva, holding a range of corporate development and capital management positions. His last assignment at Aviva was on the executive committee of their global asset management arm as M&A and Strategy Director. Prior to joining Aviva, Heneg worked in the Insurance Division of Renault and was asset liability manager for the Global Corporate Insurance Division of AXA. He holds a Masters in Finance, Banking and Insurance and a Masters in Risk Management from Paris Dauphine University. He also holds a Masters in Actuarial Science and is a Fellow of the French Institute of Actuaries.

Uday Patnaik is responsible for developing LGIM’s emerging market capabilities within the multi-strategy fixed income team. He joined LGIM in 2014 from Gulf International Bank (UK) Ltd where he held the title of Chief Investment Officer with primary responsibility for managing the flagship EMD hedge fund and other fixed income portfolios. Prior to that, he set up the Bear Stearns’ Eastern European sovereign trading desk in London, and at Merrill Lynch in New York helped manage the firm’s Latin America exposure and build the institutional customer base. Mr Patnaik has an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago and a BSc degree in Industrial Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Richard Pereira is an Investment Director in the Global Insurance Solutions Group at Aberdeen Standard Investments. He is responsible for supporting strategic relationships with insurance companies across the globe, providing insurance asset management insight on c.£160bn and thought leadership to innovate investment solutions.  In this role, he works closely with the Distribution Team and the Investment Teams across several asset classes including Private Markets, Fixed Income, Multi-Asset Strategies, Structured Solutions, Quantitative Investments, Real Estate, Equities, Derivative Trading and Liquidity Solutions.  

Mr Pereira is a Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries (FIA) (specialism in Investment & Asset Management); a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (FCA); a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (Chartered MCSI); and holds a First Class BSc (Hons) Degree in Mathematics from Imperial College London.

Mr Donadini is responsible for developing strategic asset allocation and managing investment portfolios for AIG in Asia Pacific, EMEA and Latin America and he is also the Chief Investment Officer for AIG Europe Limited. He held responsibilities within AIG as Chief Investment Officer for Japan and Latin America, in both cases actively engaged in developing investment strategies for the property and casualty, life and pensions investment portfolios. He has been also Chief Investment Officer in Colombia and Argentina. Prior to AIG, Mr Donadini worked for MetLife Investments Ltd. as Chief Investment Officer for Europe, Head Trader and Head of Research for ING Bank and as a Senior Investment Analyst at M&S Consulting, an Argentina based economic think tank. He received a BA in Economics from Buenos Aires University and a MA in Economics from Universidad Del Centro de Estudios Macroeconomicos de Argentina.

Based in London, Ed Collinge is responsible for building and maintaining insurance relationships in the UK. He also works closely with the teams across Europe, with emphasis on the Nordic and Benelux regions. Mr Collinge has more than 17 years’ experience in the insurance industry and most recently was an Executive Director within JP Morgan Asset Management’s Global Insurance Solutions business where he was responsible for UK insurance origination and additionally covered Nordic, Irish and South African insurance companies. His previous experience includes being Head of Capital Management for Legal & General’s annuity business and he was a senior member of Lehman Brothers Insurance Capital Markets team.

Kokou Agbo-Bloua leads a global team of 20 financial engineers focused on the generation of differentiated trade ideas, unique implementations and hedging solutions across asset classes for hedge funds, global macro, asset managers and institutions.
He joined Societe Generale Corporate & Investment Banking in 2014 and was most recently Head of Equity & Derivative Strategy Europe at BNPP in London for 4 years, where he was responsible for European fundamental equity strategy, derivatives parameters, global cross-asset themes and convertible bonds strategy. Prior to this, he started his career on the trading side: Executive Director at JP Morgan from 2009 to 2010 and between 2000 and 2008 he was a portfolio manager at Goldman Sachs Principal Strategies (GSPS). He managed directional long/short, convertible bonds and volatility portfolios across asset classes. 
Born in Togo and educated in China, where he spent 12 years of his life, Kokou Agbo-Bloua graduated with an MSc in Management from HEC School of Management in Paris in 2002, and completed his post-graduate studies in Finance at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA.

Daniel Dombey is the Financial Times's Brexit Editor. He also has the post of Deputy World News Editor. Before returning to the UK in June 2015, he served as Turkey Correspondent, based primarily in Istanbul. He had been previously stationed in Washington, working there from 2007 until 2011 as the FT's US Diplomatic Correspondent. Mr Dombey has also covered the diplomatic beat for the FT in both London and Brussels. During five years in the Belgian capital, he covered a series of other areas, including the start of EU membership negotiations with Turkey, competition policy and efforts to agree on a European constitution. Mr Dombey started writing for the FT in Mexico in 1995. He has an MPhil in Latin American Studies from Cambridge University and a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.
