Overview

In its entire history, the manufacturing industry has always been taking on new innovative technologies and adapting to the changes that the technologies impose upon workforces and business models. From advanced robotics to Artificial Intelligence and IoT, manufacturing continues to be analysed and adapted to fit ever-changing digital expectations.

These digital expectations though, because they are continually changing, are constantly putting pressure on the labour force and increasing the challenge for manufacturing jobs. Senior stakeholders are trying to understand how best to update the skillsets of their workforce and how best to utilise them alongside digital systems and automation.

The​ FT-PTC Future of Industrial Innovation Global Series ​will convene leaders in R&D, design, production, operations, service and maintenance from a variety of manufacturing sectors such as automotive, consumer products and energy. Entitled ‘​How manufacturers are adapting to compete​’, each half-day forum will take attendees on a journey to explore the ever-complex ecosystem that manufacturers must navigate if they are to reach a status of digital maturity, encompassing a skilled and adaptable workforce, and a vision that is future-proof and competitive.

Joe Miller is the FT's Frankfurt Correspondent, covering the titans of German industry, the Mittelstand and the IT sector. He joined the FT from BBC News, where he was a business correspondent in London, New York, Berlin and New Delhi. He was a George Weidenfeld Fellow at the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich in 2015. He graduated from the University of Leeds with an honours degree in English Literature.

As Chief Information Officer (CIO), Klaus Glatz implemented a globally uniform IT architecture within the ANDRITZ GROUP. For over 12 years, he was responsible throughout the ANDRITZ GROUP for the execution of all IT core services and systems, such as SAP, Customer Relationship Management, Product Life Cycle Management, Enterprise Content Management, and IT security.

In order to gather extensive experience in the optimization of global business processes, Mr Glatz moved to the Hörbiger Group as Chief Process Officer (CPO) in December 2013.

He later joined Pike Consulting Partners GmbH as Managing Partner. The main focus of his consulting activities were: Strategic IT Management, Operational IT Management, Business Process Management, Team Development & Coaching, and Finance & Performance Management.

In January 2017, he returned to ANDRITZ AG. In his new position as Chief Digital Officer (CDO), he is responsible worldwide throughout the ANDRITZ GROUP for the development of digital practices and their implementation and also for global IT.

Dirk Abendroth is Chief Technology Officer of the future Continental Automotive group sector. In this role, he is responsible for the corresponding global research and development activities. The multi-award-winning development manager is an expert in the development of systems for automated driving, connected mobility and electric vehicle drives. In his role as CTO, Dr Abendroth functions as the central contact for customers and business partners with regards to strategic technology and innovation in the Continental Automotive group sector.

In 2004, following his studies in electrical engineering and his subsequent dissertation at the Hamburg University of Technology, he started as a development engineer at BMW in Munich, where he held various management positions in the areas of powertrain strategy, powertrain design, benchmarking and prototypes from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2014, he was in charge of the Software Development and System Integration of Electrified Powertrain division. In 2014 he became the head of electric powertrains, including those for the BMW i3 and i8 models.

From 2016 to 2018, Dr Abendroth was responsible for the Autonomous Driving and Powertrain units at Byton.

James (Jim) Heppelmann is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PTC, responsible for driving the company’s global business strategy and operations. During Mr. Heppelmann’s leadership tenure, PTC has assembled the industry’s leading industrial innovation platform and field-proven solutions and services that enable companies to design, manufacture, operate, and service things for a smart, connected world. He also serves on PTC’s Board of Directors.

Mr. Heppelmann has emerged as a driver and thought leader in industrial innovation. Together with Harvard Professor Michael E. Porter, he has co-authored three highly influential articles regarding the transformational impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) on business, including the November 2014 Harvard Business Review cover story ‘How Smart, Connected Products are Transforming Competition,’ and the companion ‘How Smart, Connected Products are Transforming Companies,’ published in the October 2015 Harvard Business Review. Their third Harvard Business Review collaboration, published in November 2017, ‘A Manager’s Guide to Augmented Reality,’ is a collection of articles that define why every organization needs an Augmented Realty (AR) strategy.

Mr. Heppelmann was named one of ‘7 IoT Leaders to Watch in 2017’ by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and has previously been recognized as ‘IoT CEO of the Year’ by PostScapes, ‘Technology CEO of the Year’ by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council, and received the ‘CAD Society Leadership Award’ for his work with the Internet of Things. A dynamic speaker, Mr. Heppelmann has been featured as a keynote presenter at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) events on topics such as ‘How Smart, Connected Products Are Redefining Manufacturing’ and was a featured speaker on ‘the role of digitization in America’s advanced industries’ at the Brookings Institution. He has been published and quoted in numerous global business and trade media, including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Bloomberg Businessweek.

Mr. Heppelmann is a member of the board of directors at SENSATA, a world leader in automotive and industrial sensors and controls, and was recently elected to the MassTLC (Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council) Board of Trustees. He also serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the University of Minnesota College of Science & Engineering, and has been recognized as one of the ‘Top 100 CEO Leaders in STEM’ by the STEMconnector organization.

Experience
Prior to his appointment as CEO in 2010, Mr. Heppelmann served as PTC’s president and chief operating officer, responsible for managing the operating business units of the company including R&D, marketing, sales, and services. From 2001 to 2009, he served as PTC’s chief technology officer, driving the company’s product vision and strategy, product development, and product marketing and management.

Mr. Heppelmann joined PTC in 1998 when the company acquired Windchill Technology, a Minnesota-based company that he co-founded and served as its chief technology officer. Before co-founding Windchill Technology, Mr. Heppelmann served as chief technology officer at Metaphase Technology.

Education
Mr. Heppelmann attended University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on computer-aided design.

Executive Vice President of Digital Transformation Solutions

Craig Melrose is the Executive Vice President of Digital Transformation Solutions at PTC. In this role, he works to build customer-facing, (operationally transformative) solutions that incorporate PTC’s industry-leading CAD, PLM, IoT, and AR technologies. His responsibilities include liaising (interacting? Liaising sounds low impact to me) directly with the customers to develop, scale, and roll out tailored industry 4.0 programs based on their unique operational excellence goals and needs. 

Prior to joining PTC, Mr Melrose served as a Partner at McKinsey & Company for over 20 years, leading numerous operations and digital transformation initiatives, working directly with customers to understand their challenges, and identifying both tactical and strategic solutions globally and across dozens of industries. Throughout his career, he has helped companies dramatically enhance their factory automation strategies, including Toyota Motor Manufacturing, where for five years prior to joining McKinsey, he led the improvement of the Toyota Production System and Toyota’s operating performance through the introduction of new products across North America.

Mr Melrose earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.
