Full Overview
Investing in biomedical research does more than lead to new medicines – it helps build healthier communities, stronger economies and greater resilience for the future. In the United States, United for Medical Research calculates that funded research supported almost 391,000 jobs and generated more than $94 billion in economic activity in 2025. Recent estimates from the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations suggest that every €1 invested in developing new medicines generates around €5.70 in wider social and economic value. Meanwhile, a Mckinsey article highlighted Asia has emerged as a major centre for biopharmaceutical research, accounting for 43% of the world's innovative biopharmaceutical pipeline.
Yet making the case for sustained investment in biomedical research is becoming harder. Governments are balancing competing priorities and research and development can be treated primarily as an expense. The way research is funded is also changing with global competition for talent, investment and research is increasing. To support the development of health innovation, governments, funders and industry will need to consider how investment, policy and collaboration can create the conditions needed to develop new medicines and other health innovations.
This Financial Times webinar, hosted in partnership with ViiV Healthcare, will bring together policymakers, funders, researchers, philanthropies and industry leaders to explore how to keep medical innovation moving forward. The conversation will examine how to create the right conditions for future breakthroughs – and deliver clear benefits for patients, health systems, economies and society. Speakers will discuss how to better recognise the economic, health and social impact of new medicines, how partnerships can help share risk and accelerate progress, and how new funding models could support the next generation of drug development.
